4000 Islands (Si Phan Don): A Must-Visit in Laos

Si Phan Don, or the 4000 Islands, should be on the itinerary of any backpacker visiting Laos. Due to the country’s size and poor internal transportation, visitors are frequently forced to choose between the northern and southern halves of Laos. Most visitors choose to travel to the north, where they may visit Luang Prabang (the country’s cultural gem) and mountain sites like Vang Vieng and Nong Khiaw

Because adjacent Thailand is significantly more famous for its islands and beaches, visitors tend to skip the south and the 4000 Islands. As a result, they lose out on one of Laos’ most SECRET treasures.

Where is Si Phan Don, the 4000 Islands, in Laos?

The 4000 Islands are located on the border between Laos and northeastern Cambodia, along a section of the Mekong River that runs through southern Laos.

When people talk of Si Phan Don, they’re usually talking about the three islands of Don Det, Don Som, and Don Khong.

They are highly worth seeing because they offer a look at rural Laos river life. The 4000 Islands have some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country, and in the past the Irrawaddy freshwater dolphin, which no longer exists.

Don Det: the most obvious choice

Don Det is the preferred backpacker route’s choice.  Don Det is the most affordable island to visit in terms of lodging, food, and drink.  It’s also the simplest island to visit in terms of planning activities.

There is Western and Asian food, cheap beers, happy shakes, and bars here, however, they all close by 23:00.  For seriously low prices, you can find a cheap dorm room for $2 or a bungalow facing the river with a hammock swaying in the breeze for $5.

Further away from Don Det town, it gets more peaceful and rural. Because there are no cars on the island, roosters will have to wake you up in the morning.  The western part of the island is quieter and has sunset views.

You become aware of how laid-back this place is when you stroll across the main street. Like time has just started to move a little more slowly and your pace has just started to do the same. Before turning into a lush path for walking and cycling, the roadway is lined with a few cafes, pubs, and convenience stores.

Where to stay in Don Det

As mentioned earlier, you can find dorms and bungalows for as low as $2, but they may not have all the features that you are looking for such as air conditioning. Given that Si Phan Don is so cheap for travellers compared to other countries, you might afford a bit more comfort.

We stayed at Mama Leurth Sunset Guesthouse which has spacious rooms with air conditioning for around $10 per night.

Don Khong: a short ride from Don Det

Once settled in Don Det, you can rent a bicycle (for around $1) and ride across the rusting French railway bridge to spend the day exploring the neighbouring island of Don Khong and Khone Phapheng Falls, Southeast Asia’s largest waterfall, which is located on the island!

Don Som: A Slice of Heaven in Laos You Never Knew Existed!

Now let’s talk about an absolute hidden gem in Laos – Don Som Island! If you’ve been searching for a place to escape the touristy craziness and get a taste of authentic rural life, this little paradise is calling your name.

Don Som is Nature’s Masterpiece

Imagine yourself on a tiny island surrounded by the sparkling waters of the Mekong River, with nothing but peaceful farmland reaching as far as the eye can see. Don Som for the win! It’s like entering a peaceful oasis where time seems to slow down and all your concerns vanish like magic.

Prepare to be amazed by Mother Nature! Don Som is surrounded by lush greenery, beautiful palm trees, and gorgeous rice fields. Oh, and don’t forget about the breathtaking sunsets! As the day draws to a close, the Mekong River puts on a display, colouring the sky in orange and pink hues. It’s like living within a beautiful watercolour picture!

Don Som Locals Will Steal Your Heart

The people in Don Som are some of the friendliest you’ll ever meet. Their welcoming smiles and genuine warmth make you feel like you’ve found a second home. Don’t be shy – chat with the locals, join in on traditional ceremonies, and get a taste of their lip-smackingly delicious Lao cuisine. It’s like becoming part of an extended, awesome family!

Where to stay in Don Som

There are not many places to stay in Don Som, when we were here there was in fact only one guesthouse: Don Som Riverside Guesthouse.

How to get around Si Phan Don

Cycling is the way to go here, and it’s super fun, too. Pedal through quaint villages, say “hi” to the adorable kids, and enjoy the laid-back pace of life. It’s like a peaceful adventure that you won’t want to end! To get to Don Som on bike, you will need to rent a bicycle in Don Det and take the 2 minutes ferry ride to Don Som.

Sunsets to always remember

Prepare your cameras because you’re about to capture some seriously Instagram-worthy photos! The sunsets in Si Phan Don is unlike anywhere else, and is one of the best sunset spots we have ever experienced. It is strange as the country has no sea, but as the sun sets over the Mekong river, the sky transforms into a magnificent palette of colours.

Conclusion

So there you have it – Si Phan Don, the hidden paradise in Laos that will steal your heart and leave you longing for more. If you’re up for a chilling adventure like no other, and a chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of Laos. Trust us, this is a journey you won’t regret!
